Chocolate Oatmeal Chews

1 (12 ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Melt chocolate chips in top of double boiler over hot water; remove from heat. Stir shortening and salt into melted chocolate.

In mixing bowl, beat eggs until thick and lemon-colored. Gradually add sugar; beating until very thick. Stir in chocolate mixture, oats and vanilla extract.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto greased cookie sheet; bake for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet while still warm.

Makes 6 dozen.
